Ninja the Protector

The DVD of Ninja the Protector has finally arrived, and it cost a gut-busting 39p. While I’ve not yet watched it I can say with confidence that its a hidden classic. Just check out the trailer below, and if that doesn’t convince you, and your not worried about seeing the ending, watch the dramatic and powerful ending.

“An evil ninja challenges a righteous ninja… only a ninja can defeat a ninja…”

Bruce Dern Graduation Speech in Middle Age Crazy.

Last Night myself and a couple of friends were going to watch back to back 70′s sci-fi films, as it happened we only watched one, which was Silent Running starring Bruce Dern. I enjoyed the film and with modern fears surrounding Global Warming and Biodiversity it still has a relevant message to a modern audience, a rarity from such films. Here is a summary of the film taken from IMDB:

“The loner crew member of a spaceship harbouring Earth’s last nature reserves goes renegade when he is instructed to jettison his beloved forests and return home. Accompanied only by three robots, he ponders the fate of his last pocket of nature and the murders of his fellow crew members in this far-looking speculative film.

Not too long after watching the film we searched for Bruce Dern, an actor of which we knew nothing about, on Youtube and come across this clip of him in the film Middle Age Crazy which I enjoyed and would like to share (the ending is a bit corny):

2011, Year of the Spoon?

How has 2011 begun thus far for me? Pretty good really. Up till now I’ve spent most of it finishing a university assignment on British working class diet circa 1900; this has been both equally enlightening as it has annoying.

I’m not one for making new years resolutions as such, but I do have some notions, mainly vague and ill thought out, aims and ideas I wish to follow up. The one most pressing on my mind is wanting to make a piece of film. As people may know I used to work on, with various friends, loads of half-baked and badly produced animations, video and audio in my early teens and it was a very enjoyable experience. I can’t help to want to return to this passion; I can’t help think we’d produce something much better now, however niche it maybe, and that we all, naturally, have much better knowledge of how to produce a piece of work and that any ideas we may have today could be better bulked out rather than just being one phrase or concept stretched to the point that it lacks any substantial substance.

This being said, the idea we are considering working on in the very near future is based on a childish idea from our early teens which has stuck around in my mind such conception. Described briefly its a super hero posse called “Captain Spoon and the Cutlery Boys”, they basically seek vengeance against the evil forces of the Kitchen, for example: Demonic Whisks. Its essentially going to play on superhero cliches and memes in a kitchen setting with plenty of childish and surreal humour. I envisage the “shows” starting off with narrated storyboards and then a fade into a different depiction of the action, be it either puppets or claymation or crudely drawn Roobarb style animation to name a few.

There are more general objectives I have for the year; I refuse to call them “New Years Resolutions”, but I guess I blog about them another day. The next two weeks then, in general, I’m going to be reading comic books (mainly Alan Moore stuff) and taking the first few steps in getting the new project underway.

American: The Bill Hicks Story

I’m sure I’ve mentioned on here many times that I’m a fan of the comedian Bill Hicks, who tragically died at a relatively young age; one could only imagine what he’d think about the world today. I found out recently that there has been a doucmentraty film made about his life and work, looks rather interesting. If you’ve never heard of Bill Hicks or your possibility interested about the film the trailer for it is below.

If you happen to live in the Wolverhampton area I’ve found out; via the site americanthemovie.com, that it will be showing at the Lighthouse Cinema on Tuesday 18th May. If your from elsewhere in the US or UK just take a look at the site for your local airing.

EDIT: Actually it airs in Wolverhampton on 18th June. Looks like i’ll go watch Four Lions this week then.

80′s Ending.

I first saw this video a few years ago and thought it was pretty funny. Funny enough in fact to consider it bookmark worthy. Well my bookmarks have gone so out of control that i decided to clean them up and i’ve happend to come across the video again. I thought it was share-worthy wether you’ve seen it or not.

“See how many super-cheesy ’80s clichés you can find in this four-minute homage to the decade of the montage.”
